Why Volunteer?

People choose to volunteer for a variety of reasons. For some, it is a chance to give back to the community or make a difference to those around them. For others, it provides an opportunity to develop new skills, build on existing experience and knowledge, or make new friends and forge a closer bond with the community. Regardless of the motivation, we often hear them say they find it challenging and rewarding.

Volunteers are also an important and invaluable resource to social service agencies (SSAs) to strengthen its manpower. Whether it is through providing support to the professional staff in SSAs, or interacting directly with the service users, volunteers contribute significantly to providing better service and help to those in need.

Why Be a Regular Volunteer?

Volunteers help to integrate service users into the community, hence improving their quality of life.

NCSS encourages corporates and individuals volunteers to engage in regular and longer term volunteerism. In the NCSS Quality of Life study conducted in 2018, it was found that social inclusion and participation have greatest impact to improving quality of life of vulnerable groups and seniors. When volunteers are involved with a social service agency on a more regular basis, they also play an important role in augmenting the manpower in the sector by complementing the role of full-time professionals and staff. With greater commitment from volunteers, social service agencies and service users get better support.

Regular volunteering not only benefits our service users, it also benefits the giver. Studies have shown that regular volunteering motivates employees, boosts team morale and encourages staff bonding. Volunteers also develop a greater sense of empathy and inspire more people to step forward. This creates a cycle of care, and a volunteering eco-system to help those in need. NCSS also encourages social service agencies to work with corporate partners to establish longer term partnerships.
