When Support Makes the Difference

In social services, the work is often about showing up for others in their hardest moments. Ms Hartini Binte Karyana knows what it means to be on the other side of that.

While studying for her Higher Diploma in Social Service at the Social Service Institute (SSI), Ms Hartini was diagnosed with cancer. It was a deeply personal battle, one that tested her as a student, a professional, and a mother. She chose to keep going – but she did not have to do it alone.
Learning, Centred Around the Individual
When Ms Hartini had to defer her studies for treatment, SSI worked closely with her to ensure that she could return and complete the programme at her own pace. Lessons were adapted and extra guidance was provided. Space was created for her to focus on both healing and learning, without having to choose between the two.
A Community That Steps In
Her peers showed up with practical help, encouragement and a quiet sense of solidarity. When childcare arrangements fell through, they welcomed her young daughter into the classroom. A small gesture, but one that said everything about the kind of environment SSI tries to build – one where empathy is lived, not just taught.
"My journey with SSI has shaped my strength through adversity and deepened my commitment to serve and support others, with knowledge, skills and heart," says Ms Hartini.
Ms Hartini went on to complete her diploma and was named the inaugural recipient of the SSI Commendation Award, presented in recognition of exceptional perseverance and dedication demonstrated throughout the programme. Her achievement is a reminder of what good support systems make possible.
