Ministry of Social and Family Development and National Council of Social Service Holds Inaugural MSF Family Scholarship Ceremony 2024

SINGAPORE, 29 JULY 2024 – Ministry of Social and Family Development (MSF) and its statutory board, the National Council of Social Service (NCSS) held its first joint MSF Family Scholarship Award Ceremony this year. The joint ceremony reflects the growing opportunities in the social service sector, and the Ministry’s commitment to attract more individuals with potential to contribute and grow their careers within the MSF Family of agencies and the social service sector.

  1. The scholarship awards are presented annually to acknowledge and affirm exemplary students who are committed to creating positive change in society and to uplift the lives of others.

  2. Masagos Zulkifli, Minister for Social and Family Development, attended the scholarship ceremony as the Guest of Honour on 29 July 2024. A total of 29 individuals received scholarships to pursue their degree or postgraduate studies in a range of disciplines. This includes:

    • Twenty-three Social Service Scholarships awarded by NCSS, which aims to groom talents in the social service sector – in the areas of social work, psychology, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and speech therapy;

    • Two Local Merit Scholarships and three Singapore Government Scholarships awarded by MSF to outstanding students who are keen to pursue their careers with MSF and the Public Service; and

    • One Singapore Industry Scholarship launched by the Ministry of Education in collaboration with government agencies, including NCSS, to develop a strong local talent core in strategic sectors such as the social service sector.

  3. Individuals who are keen to make an impact on the social service sector through challenging and fulfilling careers at the MSF Family of agencies may apply via the Public Service Commission Singapore website and the NCSS Scholarship website in September 2024. More information on the award categories and number of recipients can be found in Annex A.

Annex A - Scholarship Categories

There are four categories of scholarships awarded:

  1. Social Service Scholarship (SSS)

    The Social Service Scholarship was established in 2002 with the Professional Capability Grant administered by the National Council of Social Service (NCSS). The scholarship aims to groom talents for the sector and is awarded to outstanding individuals for studies in Social Work, Psychology, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy and Speech Therapy. This year, 23 individuals were awarded the SSS.

  2. MSF-Local Merit Scholarship (LMS) and MSF-Singapore Government Scholarship (SGS)

    MSF scholarships are awarded to outstanding students who are keen to pursue challenging and fulfilling careers with MSF, as well as to contribute to the nation as part of the Public Service. The SGS scholars are sponsored for overseas/local undergraduate studies while the LMS scholars are sponsored for local undergraduate studies. This year, two individuals were awarded the LMS and three individuals were awarded the SGS.

  3. Singapore Industry Scholarship (SgIS)

    The SgIS was launched in 2012 by the Ministry of Education working together with government agencies, including NCSS. The SgIS aims to develop a strong core of Singaporeans to anchor strategic sectors in Singapore. SgIS is offered by participating organisations across 16 industries, including social service, engineering, aviation, energy and natural resources, maritime, healthcare (administrators), and the arts. NCSS is a Sponsoring Organisation in SgIS, managing the selection process, talent management, engagement, development, and placement of SgIS scholars. This year, one individual was awarded the SgIS.
