Counsellor

A counsellor works with families and caregivers to help individuals better understand their social and psychological needs. As a counsellor, you help clients develop skills, access resources and tap on support services for multifaceted issues, including poverty, disability, addiction, delinquent behaviour, marital and mental health problems.

Key Responsibilities

The counsellor empowers clients, so that they can be self-sufficient and discover their own strengths in resolving difficulties and challenges. The key responsibilities of a counsellor include:

  • Deliver counselling assessments and interventions
  • Maintain professional, legal and ethical standards
  • Conduct practice-based research
  • Uplift professional practice in counselling

Education Requirements

The international benchmark requires counsellors to have postgraduate qualifications to practise as a licensed counsellor. While Singapore does not require counsellors to be licensed, the Singapore Association for Counselling does require postgraduate qualifications to be a registered clinical member with the Association.
