The Efficiency AI Behaviour Descriptor (BD) Collection Project is a pioneering, human-centred innovation that harnesses AI to transform behavioural documentation in Early Intervention (EI). Addressing the time-intensive and inconsistent nature of manual documentation, the project reduces administrative demands and enables practitioners to focus more fully on children, families and meaningful intervention.

The project brought together EI educators, allied health professionals and IT specialists, to co-create a solution grounded in professional practice, national standards and ethical considerations. By aligning ECDA’s BD fidelity criteria across disciplines and translating them into AI-enabled system inputs, the project improved consistency, accuracy and clarity while preserving professional judgement.

A key breakthrough was reducing reliance on retrospective, memory-based documentation. Efficiency AI enables more systematic behavioural data capture, allowing practitioners to dedicate more time to child engagement, case discussions, intervention planning and caregiver coaching. Clearer and more accessible data also strengthens communication with caregivers, supporting continuity of intervention beyond therapy sessions.

Through iterative prototyping and testing within existing EI workflows, the team refined the solution based on real-world practitioner feedback without disrupting service delivery. Designed for scalability and sector-wide relevance, the project also generates valuable insights into responsible AI adoption, workflow integration and implementation.

Efficiency AI demonstrates how technology, collaboration and professional expertise can be combined to improve service quality, strengthen workforce sustainability and ultimately deliver better outcomes for children, families and the wider EI community.
